Inspired by Nature, his language is one of flora and fauna. His sculptures resemble fantastical plants: yet they are not creatures of the outside world, but reflection of the inner self. Both Artist and Cabinetmaker, Gildas Berthelot admirably combines two skills very rarely met in one man. His pieces require both audacious and profound artistic creativity and formidable technical prowess and virtuosity. A true Renaissance man, in the spirit of Benvenuto Cellini, Berthelot walks the fine line between Art and Object.

“I design and build one-of-a-kind and limited-series wood sculptures. In keeping with my training in both sculpting and cabinetmaking, I strive to achieve a synthesis between form and function. For me, however, the symbolic and psychological roles of art as furniture are the most important aspects of the creative process.

My pieces are organic and inspired by nature; my language in one of flora and fauna. My sculptures resemble fantastical monsters – that is, organized animal or plant bodies in unusual configurations. These monsters are not something from the outside world I try to copy; rather, they play a role in my own narrative. My pieces are the story of my life.

While tucked away in my workshop, I often miss the company of others. This solitude has made me aware that, above and beyond virtuosity or technical prowess, I now wish to create pieces that generate a spirit of social interaction. Through the lyric quality of my forms, I am attempting to elaborate a way of life. I think of my work as a treasure chest of happiness.”
