What art movement was the French painter Jean Dubuffet associated with?

The artist Jean Dubuffet was a French painter and sculptor who defied categorisation. Independent of any artistic movement, Dubuffet was one of the most important figures of the art world in the 20th century. Realism was not a primary concern of the painter Jean Dubuffet in his work as an artist. Gaëtan Picon saw the figures in Dubuffet’s paintings as “… ghosts standing at the threshold of the artwork to announce its spirit (…) they are high bulwarks marked with his sign.” Provoking controversy with his paintings, Dubuffet’s approach was indeed truly anti-cultural. The French painter’s works were inspired by drawings made by children and the mentally ill—works of which he was a keen collector. Dubuffet did not seek to sell his works, as he was guaranteed to live free from want thanks to his family’s fortune.
