Technical experimentation undertaken between the world wars influenced the artistic field. The camera, as used by Man Ray in the studio and by Jacques-Henri Lartigue outside, among other examples, overturned the system of representation. In his drawing practice, Sanyu (1895-1966) also overturned the academism of his era, through his use of sometimes “marginal” models.
These texts by specialists in photographic and cinematographic images–Jacques Aumont, Albarran-Cabrera and Gabriel Bauret–offer a modern and transversal reading of Sanyu’s drawings.
