How did the artist Georges Mathieu die?
The painter Georges Mathieu died on 10 June 2012 in Boulogne-Billancourt, France, at the age of 91. The painter’s work went through a period of transformation starting in 1985 as the artist arrived at a “cosmic juncture” in his art. Abandoning the central composition that had previously shaped his work, the artist opted for the distribution of forms invading the entire surface of the canvas. After the artist’s retrospective at the Palais des Papes in Avignon, the pace of his exhibitions accelerated as his work was shown in Nantes, New York and Geneva in 1985, in Palm Beach, Luxembourg and Toulouse in 1986, and then in Nice, Zurich, Milan, Lyon, Grand, Montreal and Bologna in 1987.
