Having studied four years at the historic Art Students League during which years he met Jackson Pollock & Lee Krasner, Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman, Paul Jenkins is a major artistic figure associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement.
Starting in 1956, he was one of the major artists to be exhibited at the famous Martha Jackson Gallery in New York.

Using the technique of “controlled paint-pouring” with which the artist pours colour directly onto the support, Paul Jenkins integrates perfectly into the Action Painting movement of the Post-War period, between spontaneity and mastery of the artistic gesture.
Nourished by the complementary contributions of the art scenes of New York and Paris where he met Georges Mathieu and Pierre Soulages, he was also influenced by the masters of colour: Henri Matisse, Paul Gauguin and Vassily Kandinsky, as well as Mark Rothko.

In the 1950s, oils on canvas covered in matter like a potter’s glaze : recalling his time in his early years working with a ceramist in Kansas City, Missouri, his work evolved naturally towards the affirmation of colour, in particular from 1962 with the new use of acrylics. This resulted in refined liquid forms, whichstands out from white backgrounds, these Phenomena… inspired by Goethe’s colour theories.

Like Sam Francis, Mark Tobey, and the other artists of the New York School, Paul Jenkins was especially influenced by the theories of Jung in the 1950s, as well as by Oriental religions and philosophies, infusing his entire output with a mystical and spiritual character.
He often travelled to Asia, especially to Japan where he worked with Jiro Yoshihara and the Gutai.

LURE OF THE OBJECT ART FROM THE JUNE AND ROB HELLER COLLECTION > 8 February – 21 April 2019
This exhibition includes a diverse selection of sculpture and paintings from a couple who are among Knoxville’s most active, adventurous, and philanthropic art collectors. Contemporary glass is a particular area of focus, and the exhibition includes works by William Morris, Bertil Vallien, Oben Abright, Dante Marioni, Stephen Rolfe Powell, and Therman Statom. Complementing sculptural works are paintings by Jim Dine, Frank Stella, Christo, and Paul Jenkins. Organized by the KMA.
Lost, Loose and Loved: Foreign Artists in Paris 1944-1968 > 21 November – 22 April 2019
This show explores the contribution of foreign artists who, after the Second World War, were working in Paris, a city which still preserved a certain aura surrounding its mythical modern embodiment as a “City of Light” in the 19th century. Paris at that time, rebuilding politically, socially and economically after the war, was trying to revamp the old image of the “School of Paris”, which had always relied upon the contribution of émigré artists for the development of a modern discourse. Paris was seen as a place of freedom, where individual personalities and identities were allowed and encouraged and, equally, measured meticulously according to a form of Cartesian restraint.
This broad collective exhibition reflects the vitality and vivacity of the art scene in all its complexity, displaying the different creative trends which took hold in the city inside and outside the School of Paris at a time of fervent political debate, held to the backdrop of the new global stage opened by the Cold War.
