How did the artist Niki de Saint Phalle die?
The artist Niki de Saint Phalle died on 21 May 2002 in La Jolla, California, at the age of 72. Since her death, the Niki Charitable Art Foundation has managed the protection and promotion of the artist’s works of art.
In the last years of her life, the woman artist Niki de Saint Phalle won the Praemium Imperial Prize in Japan in 2000—a prize awarded by the Imperial Family of Japan on behalf of the Japan Art Association since 1989. The annual prize rewards outstanding contributions to the promotion and progress of the arts, and can be considered the equivalent of the Nobel Prize in the field. The artist Niki de Saint Phalle also donated 190 works of art to the city of Nice in 2001. In March 2003, Niki de Saint Phalle’s Grotto was inaugurated in the Herrenhausen Gardens in Hanover, as well as an exhibition dedicated to works donated by the woman artist to the city’s Sprengel Museum.
