How did the artist Sam Francis die?
The painter Sam Francis died of cancer on 4 November 1994 in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 71. In the last year of his life, the artist painted nearly 150 small works with his left hand, as he could no longer use his right hand.
The painter Sam Francis was also involved in research work, starting a company producing wind energy in 1975 and creating the Sam Francis Medical Research Center in 1987 to fund research into infectious diseases and HIV. The Sam Francis Art Museum was founded in 1990 and continues its charitable work in the present day.
