Gordon Onslow Ford est un peintre britannique connu pour avoir été le plus jeune membre du groupe surréaliste invité par André Breton. Sa quête permanente d’une voie indépendante le conduit d’Angleterre à Paris et de New York au Mexique. En 1947, il s’installe à San Francisco puis en 1958 à Inverness (Californie) où il sa peinture non figurative se nourrit de l’étude des philosophies asiatiques, de la calligraphie et de l’exploration des mondes intérieurs.

Les annnées de formation de Gordon Onslow Ford
Gordon Onslow Ford nait le 26 décembre 1912 à Wendover en Angleterre, dans une famille d’artistes : son grand-père Edward Onslow Ford est sculpteur et son oncle Rudolph Onslow Ford est peintre de paysage. Gordon commence donc à peindre très jeune grâce aux leçons de son oncle.
À la suite de la mort de son père, docteur dans l’armée britannique, Gordon est envoyé au Royal Naval College de Dartmouth à l’âge de 14 ans pour intégrer la marine anglaise. Pendant sa formation, il tient à jour son carnet de rapports quotidiens qui contiennent des illustrations techniques. Dans une interview de 1984, il explique : « C’est une tradition de la marine britannique de peindre des aquarelles en mer ». L’artiste arrive ainsi à mêler son devoir d’illustration et sa passion pour la peinture.
Gordon voyage beaucoup, tiraillé entre la peinture et son engagement militaire. C’est un voyage en Égypte en 1934 qui va lui permettre de choisir sa voie. Stationné à Alexandrie, il est fasciné par la ville et en fait de nombreuses aquarelles. Il y rencontre Richard Combe Abdy (1869-1938), un riche banquier anglais installé à Alexandrie et proche de la marine dont il recevait régulièrement les officiers. Gordon Onslow Ford participe aux évènements organisés chez Richard Combe Abdy, surtout pour avoir la chance de peindre les jardins de la propriété. Impressionné par son talent, Abdy devient le mécène de Gordon. Grâce à ses relations, il l’aide à quitter la marine et il lui organise sa première exposition à Londres en 1936.
Paris et le Surréalisme
Sa démission de la marine anglaise accepté en 1937, Gordon s’installe à Paris pour se consacrer entièrement à la peinture. Il étudie quelques semaines avec André Lhote puis avec Fernand Léger. Peu de temps après son installation, Gordon rencontre l’architecte chilien Roberto Matta. Ce dernier travaille alors avec Le Corbusier et est déjà un dessinateur aguerri. Gordon admire ces dessins qui étaient pour lui « les images les plus fascinantes » qu’il ait vu à Paris. Roberto Matta et Gordon Onslow Ford deviennent rapidement de très bons amis. Gordon encourage Matta dans la poursuite de sa carrière d’artiste et l’incite à se tourner vers la peinture.
En 1938, le mécène et ami de Gordon, Richard Combe Abdy décède et lui lègue une fortune considérable. Pendant que Gordon règle les affaires d’Abdy en Égypte, il prête son matériel de peinture à Matta afin de l’encourager à passer du dessin à la peinture. À son retour, les deux artistes passent l’été à Travignon en Bretagne, terre ancestrale d’Yves Tanguy. Gordon et Matta expérimentent en peinture et étudient les philosophies ésotériques. Cet été de travail transforme leur pratique artistique et ils se tournent vers l’exploration de leur inconscient et de l’automatisme surréaliste.
Roberto Matta présente Gordon à André Breton qui l’invite à intégrer le groupe des artistes surréalistes et à participer aux réunions au café Les deux Magots. Gordon se rapproche ainsi de l’écrivain Pierre Mabille et des peintres Yves Tanguy, Estéban Frances, Wolfgang Paalen et Max Ernst. Gordon devient également mécène et collectionneur : il visite ainsi les studios de Picasso, Miró, de Chirico et André Masson.
À Paris, Gordon Onslow Ford partage l’atelier de Victor Brauner. Trop intimidé pour peindre devant son ami, Gordon verse de la peinture sur la toile et met ainsi au point une méthode de peinture automatique qu’il appelle « coulage ». Puis, il décolle quelques parties de la couche picturale pour créer des effets de profondeur.
La seconde guerre mondiale et l’exil à New York
Pendant l’été 1939, Gordon loue un château à Chemilleu, dans la région Rhône-Alpes et y invite ses amis André Breton, Jacqueline Lamba, Yves Tanguy, Roberto Matta, Estéban Frances et Kay Sage. Le groupe passe l’été à peindre, à échanger des idées et à lire de la poésie. Ils reçoivent régulièrement la visite de la collectionneuse américaine Gertrude Stein et de l’écrivaine Alice B. Toklas. Le château est un véritable refuge à l’aube de la Seconde guerre mondiale.
Lorsque la guerre éclate, Onslow Ford a été rappelé dans la marine et quitte Paris pour Londres. L’association américaine Society for the Preservation of European Culture invite un certain nombre d’artistes surréalistes à se réfugier à New York. Matta et Kay Sage travaillent avec cette association et obtiennent un visa pour Onslow Ford qui lui permet de se rendre à New York l’hiver 1941. L’un des rares artistes surréalistes anglophone, Gordon est invité à donner des conférences à la New School for Social Research de New York et organise également quatre expositions surréalistes en 1941. Ces conférences et ces expositions aurons une influence très importante sur les artistes américains.
L’écrivaine américaine Jacqueline Johnson, amie de Motherwell, assiste aux conférences et rencontre Onslow Ford. Ils se marient en 1941 et la même année, le couple s’installe dans le village Erongaricuaro au Mexique et y resteront pendant 6 ans. Ils y reçoivent régulièrement leurs amis surréalistes Wolfgang Paalen, Remedios Varo, César Moro, Sonja Sekula, Estéban Frances et Roberto Matta.

La Californie et la peinture non figurative
En 1947, Gordon et Jacqueline rentrent aux États-Unis et s’installent en Californie, dans la baie de San Francisco. Gordon Onslow Ford y bénéficie d’une rétrospective au Museum of Art de San Francisco en 1948 : Towards a New
Subject in Painting. Un an plus tard, Onslow Ford acquiert le ferry Vallejo, amarré à Sausalito et invite le peintre grec Jean Varda (1893 – 1971) à l’aider à le transformer en atelier. Pendant de nombreuses années, le ferry a été un havre pour les artistes, devenant un petit centre culturel sur le front de mer. Finalement, Gordon Onslow Ford vend le bateau à l’érudit bouddhiste Alan Watts.
Au début des années 1950, Gordon Onslow Ford suit des cours à l’Académie asiatique de San Francisco et étudie l’hindouisme et le bouddhisme, qui influencent son art. De 1952 à 1957, il étudie également la calligraphie avec le maître japonais Hodo Tobase Roshi. Gordon se lie d’amitié avec le compositeur Harry Partch, pionnier de la musique minimaliste. Il adopte un style de peinture non figuratif, basé sur la ligne, le cercle et le point.
En 1957, Gordon Onslow Ford et Jacqueline Johnson font l’acquisition d’un grand ensemble de forêts vierges dans les collines d’Inverness, en Californie. Dix ans plus tard, ils donnent la majorité de ces terres à un organisme de protection de la nature, The Nature Conservancy, afin de les préserver. En 1964, le premier livre de Gordon, Painting in the Instant, est édité par Harry N. Abrams, Londres. La peinture des années 1960 de Gordon Onslow Ford se caractérise par une palette extrêmement réduite, composée uniquement de noir et de blanc. Les oeuvres de cette période sont le résultat de l’exploration de l’état méditatif et du rêve lucide. Elles sont des représentations du monde intérieur de l’artiste. Gordon engage le chimiste William Parles pour créer une peinture proche de l’acrylique, grâce à laquelle le blanc et le noir sèchent à la même vitesse, ce qui n’était pas le cas avec la peinture à l’huile.
Jacqueline Johnson meurt en 1976 alors que Gordon travaille sur son deuxième livre Creation, qui sera publié deux ans plus tard. En 1977, il bénéficie d’une importante rétrospective au Oakland Museum de Californie. Après cette exposition majeure, Gordon adopte une vie plus solitaire, consacrée entièrement à sa peinture.
Art et conscience : Dialogue avec un rêveur lucide
En 1989, Gordon Onslow Ford rencontre Fariba Bogzaran, artiste, chercheuse sur le rêve lucide et professeur à l’université John F. Kennedy University (Berkeley, Californie). Au cours de ses recherches, Fariba découvre que certaines des peintures de Gordon s’apparentent à des expériences transpersonnelle de rêve lucide et de meditation. Ils collaborent alors ensemble sur plusieurs ouvrages: Insights (1991), Ecomorphology (1994) et Once Upon a Time (1999). En 1996, Fariba Bogzaran organise l’exposition inaugurale d’Onslow Ford pour le nouveau programme M.F.A (Master of Fine Arts) sur les arts et la conscience à la galerie de l’université John F. Kennedy
(Berkeley, Californie). L’année suivante, Onslow Ford reçoit un doctorat honorifique en beaux-arts de l’université. En 1998, Gordon Onslow Ford, Fariba Bogzaran et Robert Anthoine cofondent l’organisation à but non lucratif Lucid Art Foundation pour explorer les relations entre l’art, la conscience et la nature au moyen d’expositions, de publications et de séminaires.
Gordon Onslow Ford décède à Inverness Californie le 9 novembre 2003 à l’âge de 90 ans. Il lègue son héritage à la Lucid Art Foundation (Inverness, Californie).
